The Grand Tour:
Single wall construction, 800sqft, 3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, a porch, a car port, and laundry area (sans appliances) all on a quarter acre in Hilo.
First, the outside:
| This is the laundry, it's just outside the back door. |
| A view from the back yard. |
| And around to the front yard. |
| Let's head up the driveway. |
| Our front porch. |
| Worn out screens and grimy windows. One of our first Projects. |
And now, the (somewhat less charming) inside:
The bathroom is definitely my least favorite room, and you can see why:
| That's the entire bathroom, from the hallway. |
| This is the shower, it's about 30"x 30", and the drain is slow. It's on the list. |
The kitchen is well laid out, but needs a serious cleaning:
| This is already our workshop. |
| We're planning to remove that door entirely, but we'll keep the clunky fridge until we're done sprucing everything up. |
| The walls behind the stove are super gross, also, check out our custom back door. A wood panel slides up to cover the screen and a tiny recessed latch holds it up. |
The living room has some fabulous windows:
| But the carpet is pretty nasty. We'll be a shoes-on household for the foreseeable future. |
The three bedrooms are all a little different, but it's hard to see in the photos.
| This bedroom is at the end of the hallway, it's in the roughest shape of the three. |
| It also has plumbing in the closet. Single wall construction - what you see is what you get. |
| But it might have an ocean view, the windows on the right face north, towards Hilo Bay. |
| This is the largest bedroom, it's on the southwest corner of the house. Aside from the cracked window, it's in fair shape. |
| The third bedroom is directly across from the bathroom. It's smaller and there is some termite damage on the baseboards and window frames. |
So that's the house. A few things you might be interested in:
- The home is single wall and was built in 1945. This means that all the walls are solid wood 1"x 8", the double hung windows all have solid wood frames, and the screens are in custom frames that hang from hooks on the outside of the windows. Also, all the screens are copper wire, which is why the windows look greenish.
- The floors are all hardwood, even under the carpet in the living room. They aren't level though, we'll be working on that a bit as we repair the foundations.
- The ceilings are made of an old composite called Canec. It's a particle board made from bagasse, the byproduct of sugar production from cane.
- The house has no insulation, no heat, and no A/C.
- The lush green lawn in those photos has never seen a sprinkler, Hilo gets hundreds of inches of rain each year.
Definitely a fixer upper but it's super cute :)
